Saging & Retreating

All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.”

               — Blaise Pascal

I came to the beach last night.   I am renting a little place on the Florida panhandle.   I think I needed some quiet time, but I really didn’t know that until I got here.  My phone is off, on purpose.   I am retreating, stepping back from the world.

I woke in the solitude and purity of this morning, giving myself permission to return to my true nature, my natural self.  As I stood on the small second story deck at 5am, a large, windy thunderstorm was rolling through.  A few gorgeous flashes of lightning over the ocean lit the horizon before morning light.  And the salty, sandy fragrance of rain, that you only get at the beach, permeated my sense of smell.

Then the beauty of the solace came upon me.   And the tears welled in my eyes as the birds sang and I connected with the awe and sadness of life.  And the tears continued to pour.    But joy and peace were deeply present.

There is something about the purity of the early morning.   You can feel all the heaviness of the day before has been washed away.   The air has been made fresh again.  First light is dawning.   The softness of the quietness prevails.   Our sleep and dreams have rejuvenated our inner spirit, giving us a new beginning and a new vitality.

After my tears of awe and sadness, in the early dawn light, the noise of humanity not yet upon me, I saged the beach house where I am staying.   I opened some windows, lit the sage and in a slow and thoughtful manner, saged every window, door frame and space in the house.

I regularly sage to purify my spaces, clearing them of any negative energy or spirits.   I remember the first time this concept really stuck with me, when I watched the documentary/indie movie ‘Wake Up”.   This true story is about Jonas Elrod, who was living a normal life and one morning woke up and he could see spirits.   He found that if he saged his apartment he could see the spirits leave.    So now I sage my spaces, my rentals, my apartment, my car as needed.   Every space carries a collected energy.    Think about the spaces you occupy: an empty church, a church full of people, a party, a protest, a coffee house, a Mardi Gras parade, a hospital room, a funeral.    All carry a particular vitality or vibe (vibration).    Our vibe goes where we go and either creates an uplift or a down draft.

Smoke has been used by all indigenous cultures, since the beginning of our known history, to purify, to offer up as prayers(incense), to communicate with ancestors and to inhale to evoke deeper spiritual awareness.

To get smoke something has to burn.  Burning is a chemical process, a form of alchemy.  A form of transmutation.  Solitude is a form of alchemy.  Solitude burns out of us the things we have held onto for too long.   Purifying us in the process.  Creating space for new love to light.
