Story # 42

Written by Bill Pautler

Everything We Consume is a Drug

Every cell in the body will continue to perform the functions for which it was designed throughout its entire life cycle provided its environment remains congenial to it.”

Herbert Shelton

Our bodies are a chemical factory

Everything we consume is a drug! Often when I say this to people, I get an immediate push back. I have had people scream at me, saying food is not a drug. I have had other people bring up what I would consider an intelligent response, that air and water are not drugs.

But our bodies are what we call biological, and biological means a living organism.  And living organisms are basically chemical factories.  You eat a hamburger, and then our body breaks down the food into chemicals and that turns into brain cells, skin, muscle, bone, hair and a myriad of other things in our bodies. Truly amazing!

We define a drug, from a medical perspective, as any chemical substance that, when administered to a living organism, produces a biological effect by altering its structure or function. The effect of everything we consume can be helpful or harmful, or both, depending on the substance, the dosage, and the context.

Understanding ourselves as cells in this planet

Our relationship to air

We know we are living on this planet, but we rarely think about how closely our biological bodies are tied to this planet.  We can go approximately 3 minutes without a breath of air.  At the 3 minute mark we lose consciousness and begin brain damage.

Isn’t it totally amazing that we live on a planet that provides us with fresh air basically everywhere we go?  Air consists primarily of 3 gases. 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other gases.  Of that 1%, .04% is carbon dioxide. When we exhale air 78% is still nitrogen, 16.4% is oxygen and 4.4% is carbon dioxide.

A couple of interesting facts. When nitrogen is inhaled during the breathing process, it is inert, which means it has no effect on our body.  The 4.6% differential of the oxygen we breathe in, and exhale is used by the cells to produce energy. And the additional 4% of the carbon dioxide we breathe out comes from the food we eat. The carbon dioxide we breathe out is inhaled by the plants in our atmosphere so they can grow and produce food for us.

If we really stop and think about this, our bodies are just a cell in the body of Mother Earth!

We are in a symbiotic relationship with this planet.  We are surrounded by the elements that our bodies need to survive, just like the cells in our bodies keep us alive. One big living organism.  It is totally amazing when you stop and think about it.

Our relationship to water

We can go approximately 3 days without water.  Water, another abundant resource on this planet, is mandatory for survival.  Water does a number of amazing things. One it keeps are cells plump, so they don’t collapse. Water also dissolves minerals, these minerals then become electrolytes, which are charged particles in our body.  When these particles move, their movement creates electricity.  Electricity is sent to our muscles to make them move. Electricity is what keeps our heart beating.

The signal that tells us to walk is an electrical impulse sent from the brain to our walking muscles.

But what tells the brain to walk? That would be our Spirit.

Our Spirit is the master of our body!

Therefore, our Spirit needs to make choices that will create a congenial environment for us to live a holistic, masterful life.

Herbert Shelton, author of “Human Life”, a fascinating book printed in 1912,  says,

Every cell in the body will continue to perform the functions for which it was designed throughout its entire life cycle provided its environment remains congenial to it.”

If our bodies are a cell in this world, and our bodies are made of cells, and a cell’s environment must be congenial for it to perform in the manner it was designed, then everything we consume can be helpful or harmful, or both, depending on the substance, the dosage, and the context.

And when I say everything we consume, I mean everything we consume.  Whether it is the internal oral consumption of food/drugs into our bodies or the external sensory consumption of violence, false beliefs, love or nurturing.

All of it affects the chemistry of the body!  When we are in a loving state, the body releases “feel-good” neurotransmitters in the form of dopamine and norepinephrine. When we live in fear, trauma, and stress, our body releases adrenaline and cortisol, putting us in a fight or flight mode.

If we eat a big heavy meal, then we feel lethargic, because our energy is sent to the digestive system, because digestion takes a lot of energy. If we eat fresh fruits and vegetables and shy away from sugars and processed foods, we are practicing healthy eating. Eating healthy means, we are eating in a manner that creates a congenial chemical environment for our cells.

The choices our Spirit makes creates the congenial or non-congenial environment we live in, and our chemical body reinforces our choices.

When we continuously consume things that are harmful, that creates a non-congenial environment in our minds and our bodies.  A non-congenial environment leads to a state of dis-ease, which leads to a state of disease in our physical bodies.

What drugs are we consuming and are those drugs creating a congenial environment?

None of the things listed below are a condemnation of anything we do.  If I was to list all the non-congenial things I do, it would be long.  But every day, with awareness, we should produce a more congenial environment for ourselves.

Below is a list of awarenesses to remind (make our mind new again) us of the ways to promote health, wholeness and holiness in our lives.  Becoming better stewards of our gifts and coming into our full power as Masters of Our Spirits!!!

Things we physically consume

Do we eat things that are alive, like fruits and vegetables?  Do we eat a lot of processed foods? Processed foods have chemical preservatives to keep them from spoiling and are not foods that have much life/energy in them. They don’t make us feel alive.

Food marketing is intentionally very misleading.

Do we eat fast foods?  Do we pray over our food, a moment of gratitude.  Do we do anything in excess? Drink too much, eat too much. Do we eat standing up or eat quickly.

A friend of mind told me the other day they just had to give up meat, because the thought of how so many animals are inhumanely raised and slaughtered was no longer congenial for them. Think about the stress hormones that are released into animals right before they are slaughtered.  We then consume those stress chemicals.

The average human consumed about 5 pounds of sugar per year in 1930, we are now consuming over 100 pounds per year.  We know that too much sugar keeps the body in chronic inflammation.

Do we ever fast? Digesting food takes a huge amount of energy.  We don’t eat a huge meal and then feel like doing exercise.  Because our body is using our energy for digestion.  Occasional fasting has many health benefits; one benefit is the opportunity for the body to direct its energy toward healing.

Do we get sun? Sun is a great source of energy and vitamin D. Often, we work in offices, sitting in chairs under fluorescent lights.  Do we get enough exercise?

Another friend of mine told me the other day that they had licked 100 envelopes and the envelope glue started making them sick.

I walked into a paint store the other day, and the odor of paint was strong. I felt sad that people had to tolerate that day in and day out.  Continuous exposure to solvents and paints causes irreversible brain damage.

We often excessively use coffee and tea as stimulants.  Maybe less stimulants and more rest?

Things we consume from our sensory environment

We consume daily news, overwhelmed with war, violence, and commercials about drugs that can solve our dis-ease.

What movies and shows do we consume?   Do we consume uplifting music?

Are we glued to our phones?  Are we overstimulated?  Never having silence.

Our environment?  Do we have lots of stress in our lives?  A friend recently went to the doctor for skin hives.  They knew it was due to some stressful situations in their lives.  Our skin is the largest organ in our body; it shows us signs of misalignment and dis-ease.

Do we get enough physical touch? Do we get a massage?  Our we intimate with our spouse or significant other? Do we spend time with our friends?  Do we ride bikes, play in the ocean, toss the ball?  Do we play?  Do we have fun?

Is our work in alignment with our gifts?  Are we fulfilled in our jobs?

Do we harbor hate in our hearts, victimization, trauma and other societal wounds, that keep us in a constant state of fight and flight?

Do we vacate (vacation)?  Do we re-create (recreation)?

Do we love ourselves?   Are we creating a congenial environment for ourselves?

With awareness choose wisely and create your holy aura.
